Types of Flowers

When people want to find out about the different types of flowers in existence, they may be looking for one or both of two things: first, they will be searching for the different classifications of flowers according to species, family, etc. This would be more accurately called "biological types". Then, there's also the chance they mean the different types of flowers that one gives as a gift on specific occasions, such as for weddings, anniversaries, dates, birthdays, graduations, prom, births and funerals, sickness and recuperation, loss of a loved one, flowers for people who are moving, flowers of welcome, flowers for apologies, flowers for holidays, etc.

We have a great love of flowers and nothing is quite the same as a gift of fresh (or perhaps even dried) flowers. Perhaps that's why flowers are appropriate gifts for almost all occasions. While this may be true, one also has to know the types of flowers that are appropriate for the occasion. Roses, for instance, are perfect for romantic occasions like anniversaries. They have the highest vibrational frequency of any flower, and represent love in Western culture. Because they are associated with romantic love, these might not be the best choice for someone staying in the hospital. For illness, it can be a good idea to get something brighter and more cheerful.

Another aspect of flowers that most people tend to overlook is that of their healing properties. It's true, almost all types of flowers have the ability to aid us in healing in some way. Some of these are used for relief of pain, with the most extreme example being that of the opium poppy being synthesized into the pharmaceutical drug morphine. But there are also more common, less exotic flowers such as calendula which offer relief in other ways, like when we get minor cuts and abrasions.

Many flowers which the general populace would consider weeds actually offer great healing benefits for a lot of what ails us. Grindelia, for instance, is a great expectorant which can help you cough up mucus that's hanging out in your lungs. Saint John's Wort, considered invasive in some areas, is a great anti-depressant. Passionflower is very calming, not to mention it has one of the most interesting flowers known to man! Other flowers, like sunflowers, offer us benefit more through nutrition as when we eat the seeds.
